Driving Illegally
by mike <mike@pfft.net>
This story on MSNBC.com is absolutely crazy. The Illinois Senate recently voted down (by only one vote) a bill that would have allowed illegal immigrants to obtain Illinois driver's licenses. Wait, what?
Yep, illegal immigrants, those who are not legally permitted to even be in this country, would have been legally allowed to drive in it. Proponents of the bill called it a necessary means by which to assure road safety. The theory is that if someone illegal is going to be driving anyway, why not make sure they have proper safety training? Oh my god.
The solution, and this is aimed at politicians whom I routinely despise and by whom I am almost never surprised anymore, is to arrest those illegal immigrants and let U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement handle their deportation. It is absolutely not to give them driving privileges. They need to get a visa or get naturalized like everyone else. If they can't or won't, they need to get the hell out. Oh wait, maybe that's the problem - are we trying to make them drive back to Mexico or wherever they're from? Yeah, they need a license for that...
