The English Debacle
   by angusi

Q: Explain the writer's word choice in paragraphs 1 to 3
A: The writer chose the words they chose because they thought they sounded good.

I don't get why that's not the end of it. Surely there is no deeper reason? Unless, perhaps, the reason is the writer was tired and wanted to get the paragraph finished so wrote any old rubbish?

Q: Think about the passage as a whole. What kind of tone do you think the writer is using?
A: I think the writer is using a sarcastic tone.

There, I've told you exactly what I was asked. Full marks please. What? You asked me what kind of tone I thought the writer was using. You can't tell me I'm wrong because you don't know what I'm thinking.

I just don't understand why in an English exam these kind of questions pop up. And before you say "you'd never get questions written like that in an exam, they'd be worded differently" then stop right there. I just sat my SQA Standard Grade English this year. These questions just annoy the hell of out me! Pfft!
